Generation Z, often called “Gen Z,” refers to individuals born roughly between 1997 and 2012, following the millennial generation. As of today (2024), members of Gen Z are in their teenage years, early 20s, and even approaching their late 20s, entering the workforce, finishing college, or starting new businesses.
The name “Gen Z” follows a naming convention that began with Generation X, which was coined for the group born after the baby boomers. Following Generation X came the millennials (or Gen Y), and then naturally, Generation Z emerged.
The “Z” signifies the latest generation in this sequence. Some experts argue that new terms like “Zoomers” have emerged as a playful take on the “boomer” nickname for baby boomers, but “Gen Z” remains the most widely recognized label.
Here are some traits of people who were born in the Generation Z.
Digital Natives
One of the most defining traits of Gen Z is their deep connection to technology. Unlike previous generations, Gen Z grew up with smartphones, social media, and the internet at their fingertips.
They don’t just use technology; it’s part of their identity. From social platforms like TikTok and Instagram to streaming services and gaming, digital culture is central to their lives.
Diversity and Inclusion
Gen Z is known for embracing diversity and advocating for inclusion. This generation has been raised in a more globalized, multicultural world and is highly aware of social issues like racial and gender equality, LGBTQ+ rights, and climate change.
Many in this group champion social justice and are vocal about societal change.
Entrepreneurial Spirit
Unlike previous generations, Gen Z doesn’t necessarily dream of a typical 9-to-5 career. They value independence and are drawn to entrepreneurship, freelancing, and content creation. With platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and Shopify, many Gen Zers are building personal brands or launching businesses early in life, without traditional gatekeepers.
Pragmatic and Financially Conscious
Having witnessed the financial struggles of millennials, including the Great Recession and student loan debt crises, Gen Z tends to be more cautious with money. They are financially conscious, interested in savings, investing, and seeking value in the products and services they buy. This pragmatism extends to their career choices, where stability and security are often prioritized.
Mental Health Awareness
Gen Z is highly aware of mental health issues and is much more open about discussing them than previous generations. They actively seek balance in their lives and expect employers and schools to provide mental health support.
This emphasis on well-being extends beyond the personal, influencing how they engage with brands, employers, and society at large.
