Social media fans were recently stirred into a debate as South African Grammy-winning artist Tyla reached over 9 million followers on Instagram, surpassing Nigerian songstress Tems, who holds a following of over 6 million.
The online clash saw fans comparing the two, with some hailing Tyla’s accomplishments while others defended Tems as the bigger star.
Both Tyla and Tems have made significant strides in the music industry, amassing large followings and critical acclaim for their work.
Tyla, who recently gained international fame with hits like “Water,” has quickly grown her fanbase and is celebrated for her electrifying performances and unique vocal style.
Her rising popularity in Afrobeat and Amapiano genres has placed her among South Africa’s notable artists, with many fans crediting her social media presence for her swift ascent.
Tems, on the other hand, is widely acknowledged as a leading figure in African music. With a Grammy award for her work on Wizkid’s Made in Lagos album, collaborations with global artists like Future, and significant charting on the Billboard Hot 100, she has solidified her position in the global music scene.
Known for her sultry voice and bold sound, Tems has gained a reputation that extends beyond social media metrics. Her fans argued that, while Tyla’s social media following may be larger, Tems’s influence in the industry is incomparable and based on “real-life impact.”
The social media debate quickly escalated, with some suggesting Tyla considers Tems a role model, noting similarities in their music styles and images. Supporters of Tems pushed back, asserting that social media does not equate to real-world success.
One user countered that the argument was trivial, emphasizing, “Both are successful, and none of us in the comment section are close to either artist.”
Despite the comparisons, both Tyla and Tems continue to rise as leading African music icons, representing their respective countries and showcasing their talent to the world.
Whether in terms of social media numbers or industry impact, the two artists have unique achievements, making them pivotal in shaping the global reach of African music.
