Super Eagles of Nigeria and Atalanta star Ademola Lookman was on target twice as his side thrashed La Liga league leaders Napoli 3-0. The Nigerian has not scored a league goal away from home since September 2023 before this brace.
The former Leipzig and Everton star has been consistent in the Serie A this season. he scored twice in their last game and he also scored twice today again making it four in two matches. Napoli hosted them in their Diego Armando Maradona stadium but was disappointed as their home fans went home in pain.
Serie A top scorer Mateo Retegui was surprisingly left on the bench but Lookman took charge as the visitors inflicted Napoli’s first defeat since the opening day of the season. Retegui was brought on with 14 minutes remaining and the player delivered as well, he scored in stoppage time making it his 11th goal in as many matches.
Atalanta are up to second but could be leapfrogged by Inter Milan if they beat Venezia later on Sunday. Atalanta took the lead when Charles de Ketelaere nodded the ball for the Nigerian forward to slot into the bottom corner.
The home team almost levelled immediately but Scott McTominay’s powerful effort crashed off the post.
The goal came when De Ketelaere raced down the right and squirmed between two players before passing across to Ademola Lookman, who slotted a shot into the far corner. Retegui was brought on for De Ketelaere late on and he volleyed a cross into the bottom corner to seal a fine win.
It is now no doubt that the Confederation of African Football (CAF)award will remain in Nigeria as Lookman looks more likely to win it. The current holder is Victor Osimhen but he is not even on the list this time around.
Two Nigerians were nominated for the award, skipper William Troost-Ekong and Ademola Lookman.
