Tiwa Savage Calls Out Age-Shaming and Double Standards in Fashion Criticism

Nigerian Afrobeats icon Tiwa Savage has addressed the constant scrutiny she faces over her fashion choices, emphasizing the ageism and double standards prevalent in public commentary.

During an appearance on the Receipts Podcast, Savage highlighted the sharp contrast between how Nigerian society critiques her style and how global icons like Beyoncé, who is also in her 40s, are celebrated.

“Beyoncé wears bikinis, and Americans applaud her, saying ‘black don’t crack.’ Here, they age-shame me daily,” Savage lamented.

The singer called out the fixation on her motherhood as a basis for criticism, remarking, “They say, ‘when her son grows up, he’s going to see this.’ My son will see a powerful and beautiful woman.”

Savage remains defiant, embracing her confidence and physique. “I wear bikinis because I have a body,” she declared, standing firm against societal norms that dictate what women her age should or should not wear.

Savage’s statements resonate as a broader critique of cultural attitudes toward women’s autonomy, fashion, and aging.

The mother of one is known for her fashion statement asides her artistry as a songstress. Tiwa Savage also released her movie, ‘Water and Garri’ in 2024 which shows her versatility.
