Mexican wrestling legend Rey Misterio Sr., born Miguel Ángel López Días, has passed away at the age of 66.
The tragic news comes just weeks after another family loss – the death of Rey Mysterio’s father, Robert Gutierrez, aged 76.
Rey Misterio Sr., a revered figure in the world of lucha libre and uncle to WWE Hall of Fame wrestler Rey Mysterio, started his career in 1976. After decades of thrilling fans worldwide, he retired in 2009.
His legacy includes mentoring his nephew Rey Mysterio, who has become an international wrestling sensation.The wrestling world mourns the loss of this iconic luchador.
Mexican wrestling organization Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide confirmed his passing with a heartfelt message:
“We regret the sensitive death of Miguel Ángel López Días, known as Rey Mysterio Sr. We send our most sincere condolences to his loved ones and raise our prayers to heaven for his eternal rest.”
Born in Tijuana, Mexico, Misterio Sr. originally pursued boxing before transitioning to wrestling, where he gained fame for his high-flying maneuvers and signature masked persona.
His contributions to the sport have left an indelible mark on lucha libre culture. The loss has deeply affected the Mysterio family, already reeling from the recent death of Rey Mysterio’s father, Robert Gutierrez.
Paying tribute to his father, Rey Mysterio shared an emotional statement: “Father: thank you for giving me the life I have. You did more than set the example of how to love & maintain a strong marriage and father 4 boys; you were the example and passed every single time until your death with flying colors.”
Rey Misterio Sr. will be remembered not only for his wrestling achievements but also for his influence on generations of wrestlers who continue to carry the legacy of lucha libre into the future.
