Following the comment made by former England and Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher regarding the AFCON, many people have come against him. After he made the comment, former Manchester United and England caption Rio Ferdinand in a podcast said he is not correct.
Rio is not the only person who has condemned the comment former Egypt international and Aston Villa defender Ahmed El Mohamady also disagreed. Jamie Carragher said Salah’s career had been lacking in the context of major international tournaments.
He pointed out that while Salah plays in AFCON, he hasn’t participated in the World Cup or other major competitions. According to Carragher, this limits Salah’s standing when compared to other players who regularly compete on the biggest stage.
He said the AFCON tournament is not in the class of Euros and Copa America and so it will be wrong to give him the Ballon d’Or. Reacting to this El Mohamady said s criticism of the Liverpool legend was his comment, particularly in reference to Salah’s performances in major tournaments.
He said: “Jamie Carragher doesn’t know what Major Tournaments is because he never won one. AFCON is a major tournament.” Elmohamady also said: “So proud to have won it twice.” He clearly feels that Carragher’s dismissal of it undermines Salah’s achievements with Egypt.
