Veteran Nollywood actor, Richard Mofe Damijo (RMD), is facing heavy backlash online after posting a birthday tribute to actress Omoni Oboli that many fans deemed inappropriate.
The actor shared the message on Instagram alongside a photo of himself and Oboli in a seemingly romantic pose. The image, which appeared to be from a movie scene, featured both stars in a close embrace—a gesture that did not sit well with many followers, especially considering both actors are married with grown-up children.
One Instagram user, @Bignamek, commented, “Of all the countless photos of Omoni Oboli, you choose to use this as a birthday picture? This is not nice, sir. It’s wrong from all angles. I know it’s probably from a movie set, but bringing make-believe into reality like this is not good.”
The comment section of the post quickly became a forum for criticism, as others echoed similar sentiments. Another user, @KKendobaz, wrote, “Na person wife you hold like that dey wish am happy birthday? Nawa o!”—questioning the appropriateness of the affectionate pose.
Adding to the concerns, @Mommy_ella remarked, “This picture feels inappropriate, considering you are both married with grown-up kids. Honestly, it’s disappointing coming from someone so respected.”
The incident has sparked a broader debate on social media about the boundaries of screen chemistry and public perception. While the picture likely originated from a film set, many believe that public figures like RMD must be more cautious about the images they share, especially when personal and professional lines blur.
RMD, known for his charisma and commanding presence on screen, has yet to respond to the criticism. Meanwhile, the controversy continues to fuel discussions on respect, perception, and the responsibilities of public figures in their interactions both online and offline.
