Ayra Starr Faces Backlash Over ‘Insensitive’ Post Amid NYSC Controversy

By Fasuyi Tolulope Samuel

Popular Afrobeat star Ayra Starr has come under heavy criticism for a recent social media post that many have labeled insensitive, given the ongoing controversy surrounding a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member in Lagos.

The singer took to X (formerly Twitter) to share two stylish photos of herself in a black gown, seemingly expecting admiration from her fans.

However, the timing of her post sparked outrage, as many accused her of ignoring pressing national issues—particularly the ordeal of an NYSC member who had publicly criticized President Bola Tinubu’s government over inflation and the financial struggles faced by corps members.

The controversy erupted after the corps member’s viral video highlighted the economic hardship in Nigeria and mocked Lagos for its alleged bad odor. Reports later emerged that NYSC officials were threatening her in response to her comments.

Amid the heated debate, Ayra Starr’s post was seen as tone-deaf, leading to widespread backlash.

One social media user, @Obaji_esq, expressed frustration, writing:”Can’t you see that today is about calling out bad government? Can’t you use your platform for once and talk about the real issues? Must you post your face and body?”

Another critic, @PapiJruee, urged the singer to use her influence for advocacy, stating:

“Do you know how much love you’d get if you wielded the power you have over social media to help amplify the cries of those who are still your fans, Oyinkan? Don’t stay silent. It concerns you too. Nothing stops you from projecting the cries of your people. Oyinkan, show up!”

Similarly, @KlasickTheHost slammed the singer for being out of touch with national concerns, writing:

“The country is in a mess, and you’re here posting about your nakedness. You haven’t said anything about the young NYSC corper being threatened for calling out the government! You should read the room, girl!”
