In the age of social media, everyone wants a piece of the limelight. But how can you tell if someone is genuinely interested in you or just clout chasing?
Clout chasing refers to the act of associating with someone purely to gain attention, fame, or status. Here are the telltale signs to watch out for.
First, notice if your interactions feel superficial. Clout chasers are more interested in showcasing their connection to you rather than building a meaningful relationship. They’ll often steer conversations toward your achievements or your social following and rarely dive into deeper, personal topics.
Another red flag is their constant need to be seen with you, especially in public or on social media. If they always suggest activities that involve public exposure—tagging you in photos, videos, or live streams—it’s a clear sign they’re more interested in leveraging your influence than your friendship.
Clout chasers also exhibit inconsistent support. They’ll disappear when you’re going through tough times but suddenly show up when you achieve something noteworthy. Their friendship is transactional, contingent on how much you can boost their image.
Lastly, pay attention to how they talk about others. If they frequently mention high-status individuals they’ve connected with or show off these relationships to elevate their own status, it’s a sign they view people as stepping stones to fame.
To avoid being clout-chased, set boundaries and look for people who value you for more than your social influence. Genuine friends are there through thick and thin, not just when the cameras are rolling.
Keep your circle authentic, and remember: not everyone deserves a place in the spotlight of your life.
