Afrobeats superstar Davido has revealed that veteran highlife musician Bright Chimezie served as a major inspiration behind his hit song “With You,” which features singer Omah Lay.
In a recent FaceTime conversation between the two artists, Davido expressed admiration for Chimezie’s music, particularly the classic track “Because of English.”
He shared that the global sound of “With You” was creatively influenced by the veteran’s style and energy.
“The latest hit I just did with Omah Lay, I used inspiration from your song, ‘Because of English’,” Davido told Chimezie.
Chimezie responded with surprise and delight, “Yeah?”Davido affirmed, “Yes o, I will tell them to play it for you. It’s trending everywhere, the whole world.”
The DMW boss went further to express a desire to meet Chimezie in person, noting the impact the highlife legend has had on his musical journey. “It would be nice to meet you face-to-face,” Davido said during the call.
He added that he was making plans to bring Chimezie to Lagos to make the meeting possible.“I’m still around for a bit, so I was telling them maybe we will get you to come to Lagos so we will meet. It would be nice,” he said.
Chimezie warmly welcomed the invitation and responded with equal enthusiasm: “Okay, that would be wonderful, that would be nice.”
“With You” by Davido featuring Omah Lay is off Davido’s fifth studio album titled “5ive”.
