“Davido is a Gospel Artiste”_Pastor Tobi Says

Flamboyant UK-based Nigerian pastor, Tobi Adegboyega, has sparked intriguing debates by labeling Afrobeats sensation David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, as a gospel artiste.

During his appearance on the Off The Record podcast, Adegboyega explained that gospel, at its core, means “good news,” and he believes Davido’s music embodies this essence.

Adegboyega cited Davido’s inspiring track “Stand Strong” as a prime example, stating, “Gospel means good news. Everyone there is a gospel artiste. Davido is a gospel artiste. Have you heard: ‘Because I stand strong?’”

This interpretation redefines gospel music beyond traditional boundaries, embracing any content that uplifts and motivates.

The pastor addressed criticism surrounding his decision to feature secular musicians like Zlatan at his recent birthday celebration instead of conventional gospel artists.

Explaining his rationale, Adegboyega shared, “What I had then was my friends—friends who are there through thick and thin. Davido told me: ‘I just want to be there and perform for one hour.’ They’re my friends. I didn’t pay any of them. They love me, and I will give my friends platforms.”

While his approach has drawn skepticism from some gospel artists, Adegboyega remains unfazed, emphasizing the importance of surrounding himself with supportive individuals over detractors.

“If gospel artistes aren’t my friends and are instead joining the bandwagon to criticize me… What should I do? Drag them with a rope?” he remarked humorously.

Adegboyega further revealed his deep connection with his performers, describing Zlatan as “like a son” and underscoring the personal bonds that guide his choices.

Dismissing critics, the pastor concluded with optimism: “The next one will be bigger because my circle of friends keeps growing.”
