Japa: AY Makun Reacts to Land-Buying and Selling Cycle Among Nigerians

By Fasuyi Tolulope Samuel

Nigerian comedian and actor, Ayo Makun, popularly known as AY, has sparked a conversation about the ongoing trend of Nigerians selling land.

AY mentioned how Nigerians relocate abroad, only to work multiple jobs and eventually send money back to buy land again in Nigeria.

In a thought-provoking Instagram post, AY highlighted the irony of this migration pattern. He observed that many Nigerians sell their properties to fund their relocation, where they engage in multiple jobs to survive.

However, after years of hard work, they often remit funds back home to acquire land, creating what he described as an endless cycle.

AY wrote, “Nigerians abroad are working so hard doing multiple jobs to buy land back home, while Nigerians back home are selling their lands to relocate abroad so they can do three jobs to buy land again in Nigeria. Please explain to me what type of cycle this is?”

The comedian’s remark resonated with many Nigerians, as it sheds light on the realities of migration, economic struggles, and the pursuit of a better life.

While some social media users agreed with his observation, others argued that relocation offers better career opportunities, security, and quality of life despite the sacrifices involved.

Ayo Makun is one of Nigeria’s most successful comedians, actors, and filmmakers. He rose to fame through stand-up comedy and later expanded into the movie industry, where he has produced blockbuster films such as 30 Days in Atlanta, A Trip to Jamaica, and Merry Men: The Real Yoruba Demons.

Beyond entertainment, AY is known for his social commentary, often addressing societal issues with humor and wit. He has won several awards, including the Box Office King Award, recognizing his contributions to Nollywood’s success.
