Oscar-winning Hollywood actor Gene Hackman, 95, and his wife, classical pianist Betsy Arakawa, 64, were discovered deceased alongside their dog in their Santa Fe, New Mexico residence on Wednesday afternoon.
The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office reported that deputies conducted a welfare check around 1:45 p.m. local time after concerns from a neighbor and found the couple and their pet without signs of foul play.

The causes of death are currently under investigation. Sheriff Adan Mendoza stated, “At this time, there is no evidence to suggest foul play; however, investigations are ongoing to determine the exact causes of death.”
Gene Hackman’s illustrious career spanned over four decades, earning him two Academy Awards. He won Best Actor for his role as Jimmy “Popeye” Doyle in “The French Connection” (1971) and Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of a vengeful sheriff in “Unforgiven” (1992).
Hackman was also known for his performances in “Bonnie and Clyde” (1967), “The Conversation” (1974), and as Lex Luthor in the “Superman” films. He retired from acting in 2004 to focus on writing, authoring several historical fiction novels.
Betsy Arakawa, a talented classical pianist, married Hackman in 1991. The couple had resided in their Santa Fe home for many years, leading a private life away from the public eye.
Tributes have poured in from the film industry, with director Francis Ford Coppola remarking, “Gene was a master of his craft, bringing depth and authenticity to every role. His loss is immeasurable.”
Filmmaker Edgar Wright added, “Hackman’s performances were a masterclass in acting. He leaves behind an unparalleled legacy.” Hackman is survived by his three children from his first marriage.
The family has requested privacy during this difficult time. The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths. Further details will be released as they become available.
