Nollywood actress Lizzy Anjorin has finally broken her silence following the controversial decision by gospel singer Tope Alabi to reject a paid invitation to perform at her surprise birthday party.
According to reports, fans of the actress based abroad had pooled the sum of ₦3.5 million to book the renowned gospel artiste for a surprise performance in celebration of Anjorin’s birthday.
However, upon arriving at the event venue and discovering that the celebrant was Lizzy Anjorin, Tope Alabi reportedly declined to leave her car and opted to return home, refunding the payment in full.
The incident has sparked widespread reactions across social media, with many of Anjorin’s fans expressing disappointment and demanding explanations.
Addressing the controversy in a video shared online, Lizzy Anjorin expressed gratitude to her fans while clarifying her position on the matter.
“I’m a Muslim and I didn’t expect my fans to invite a gospel singer to my birthday. They should have invited an Islamic singer who is my fan,” she stated.
The actress noted that while she holds no grudge against Tope Alabi, she personally would never consider inviting the gospel singer for such an event, emphasizing that she already has access to her music.
“I can never invite Tope Alabi to perform for me. I have easy access to Tope Alabi’s songs on her album,” she said.
Despite the controversy, Lizzy Anjorin stressed that she is not offended by the singer’s actions. Instead, she used the opportunity to caution her fans about extravagant spending, particularly in times of economic hardship.
“I already warned my fans to stop wasting money. I thank God I’m alive and healthy for my birthday. I don’t know why she refused to come down from the car,” she added.
In a reflective tone, the actress suggested that the money spent on the booking could have been channeled towards a more meaningful cause. She cited a heartbreaking example of a pregnant woman who tragically lost her life due to her husband’s inability to afford hospital bills.
“The payment made to the renowned singer could have been donated to charity,” she noted.
