Nigerian singer Spyro has shared a deeply personal story about a period in his career when his faith was put under intense scrutiny — and how he chose conviction over compromise.
The “Who’s Your Guy” crooner recalled that after parting ways with his former record label in 2019, he embarked on a solo journey with no corporate sponsorship or investor support.
Determined to succeed, he funded his career through a mix of bank and personal loans, relying heavily on grit, persistence, and unwavering trust in God. But not everyone in his camp approved of his overt Christian identity.
According to Spyro, some team members approached him with a suggestion they believed would help broaden his appeal and attract more opportunities. They urged him to tone down his “Jesus Boy” image, claiming it might limit his marketability and earning potential.

“They even advised me to remove ‘Christ Ambassador’ from my profile,” Spyro said. “I remember saying I would rather DIE than remove Jesus from my profile.”
While he acknowledged that he understood their perspective, Spyro refused to alter the foundation of his brand. In his words, “I could not compromise on my convictions.”
One associate even proposed a middle ground, suggesting he replace “Christ Ambassador” with the more generic phrase “Child of God,” which they argued was less restrictive. But Spyro declined, insisting on keeping the specific mention of Jesus.
“I told them the name of Jesus will open doors for me,” he said. Years later, Spyro says time has proven him right. The same individuals who once questioned his branding have now reached out to praise his success and resilience.
“A lot of artistes are suffering now — no deals, no shows — but you are in a very good place and I am proud of you,” one former team member reportedly told him.
