Thomas Tuchel’s Appointment, England Bow to Pressure

The appointment of former Chelsea and Bayern Munich head coach Thomas Tuchel as the new head coach of England has revealed one thing. While many are celebrating, others has pointed to the fact that itĀ  is now clear that the voice of the people matters.

England Appoints Thomas Tuchel As New Manager

Before now, it’s many years since England has a foreigner as their manager and many have said the great feature of England lies in them appointing a foreigner. The German tactician is the third non-British permanent manager of the England men’s team after Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.

England have been without a permanent manager since Gareth Southgate resigned. Southgate resigned after England’s lost in the 2024 Euro final to Spain. The team was overseen by Lee Carsley on an interim basis.

The English man will remain in place for England’s final two Nations League matches against Greece and the Republic of Ireland in November, before Thomas Tuchel will formally take over after that.

Tuchel’s formal unveiling is expected on Wednesday at Wembley. His main target will be leading England through qualification for the 2026 World Cup which takes place in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Tuchel was not the only manager approach for the role as they also approached Pep Guardiola. The Manchester City manager was approached in the summer to see if had an interest in the role but he declined.

Tuchel is familiar with English football since he has managed Chelsea between January 2021and September 2022. The 51-year-old helped Chelsea won their second Champions League, and first ever Fifa Club World Cup and Uefa Super Cup.

The manager has a very good credentials as he has won the German Cup with Dortmund and two Ligue 1 titles at PSG, including a domestic treble in 2019-20.

His last high-profile job was manager of Bayern but, after the club failed to win the Bundesliga title for the first time since 2011-12 last season, he left the position despite still having a year to run on his contract.
