The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested popular TikTok personality Murja Ibrahim Kunya in Kano over allegations of abusing the Nigerian currency, the naira.
According to reports, a source within the anti-graft agency confirmed Kunya’s arrest to Kano-based Freedom Radio, stating that investigations were ongoing and that she would be charged in court upon completion of the probe.
Murja Kunya, known for her controversial content under the TikTok handle Yagayagamen, transitioned from a casual social media user to a full-time influencer.
However, her content has often attracted criticism, leading to multiple convictions in Kano State. Her arrest is part of a wider EFCC crackdown on social media influencers accused of naira abuse.
Other TikTok personalities, including Al’amin G-Fresh and Ashir Idris, have also been detained for similar offenses.
This development follows the earlier arrest and prosecution of Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, in April 2024. The controversial crossdresser and social media personality was sentenced to six months in prison for spraying and mishandling the naira at public events.
Bobrisky, who had pleaded guilty to the charges, became the first high-profile celebrity to be jailed under the law prohibiting the abuse of Nigeria’s currency.
The EFCC has intensified its enforcement of regulations against currency abuse, warning that public figures and influencers found violating the law will face legal consequences. The agency has consistently emphasized that defacing, spraying, or mutilating the naira is a criminal offense under the Central Bank of Nigeria Act.
