Renowned Nigerian singer Timi Dakolo has candidly described his musical journey as serendipitous rather than premeditated.
In a heartfelt conversation on the “On The Record” podcast, Dakolo shared insights into his evolution from a church choir enthusiast to a celebrated artist.Reflecting on his beginnings, Dakolo revealed that music initially served as a personal escape and a means to impress his peers.
“I used to sing in choir and during morning devotions. We even wrote songs in notebooks to impress the girls,” he said. At the time, a professional music career was far from his aspirations.
The turning point came in 2007 when he won the inaugural season of Idols West Africa. This triumph was the catalyst that transformed his hobby into a full-fledged profession.
Dakolo recounted his internal dialogue post-victory: “I said to myself, ‘Okay, we are here. Sometimes you meet your destiny on the road you take to avoid it.’”
Despite his success, Dakolo remains humble, consistently referring to himself as an “accidental musician.” This unique perspective underscores his authenticity and passion for the craft, making him a beloved figure in Nigeria’s music industry.
Timi Dakolo is one of Nigeria’s finest vocalist and songwriter. He is known for his beautiful rendition of the Nigerian anthem and credited to evergreen songs such as “Iyawo Mi”.
