The 33-year-old has been with the club since January 2018 and his current contract with the club will run out at the end of the season.
Vigil van Dijk wants Contract Extension at Liverpool
Vigil Van Dijk speaking about extending his contract said: “Discussions are ongoing, we will see what happens in the future.” He also said: “My full focus is on Liverpool, wanting to win games that are ahead of me and nothing else.” “What the future will bring I have no idea at the moment. I can only tell you that discussions have started and we will see.”
The Merseyside club signed the Netherlands center back for for £75m from Southampton and he has helped the club win the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup and Fifa Club World Cup.
Van Dijk was signed by German tactician Jürgen Klopp, and many thought the player will leave the club at the end of the season since Klopp has left the club. Surprisingly, the new manager and the center back are working really good together so he wants an extension of his contract.
Under the new manager who is also a Dutchman Arne Slot, he has helped Liverpool to the top of the Premier League this season with seven wins from their opening eight games. Liverpool has only conceded three goals this season in the English Premier League. Speaking about his relationship with the new manager he said: “I feel good, physically, mentally and I am having fun.”
He also said: “When it’s time to make a decision, you guys [the media] will know it as well.” The club is yet to respond to his proposal but it is expected that the club will give him an extension. This now means a huge disappointment from the Saudi Pro League clubs who have been looking to sign him at the end of the season.
