How Simeone Family Stole Show on UCL Night

Last night’s Champions League game came with lots of drama but one that stood out is the synergy of Giuliano Simeone and his father Diego Simeone. The son Simeone scored a goal and set up another as Atletico Madrid secured a place in the last 16 round.

The Spanish La liga side was in total control even though they were playing from away. They registered a comprehensive victory over German Bundesliga side Red Bull Salzburg. Atletico only needed a win to guarantee their progression and they sure grabbed that win.

22-year-old Simeone scored his first Champions League goal in the fifth minute of the game to kick start their victory race. The player scored the goal by shooting low into the far corner from the right side of the box. Eight minutes later, the manager’s son who is one of three sons of Diego Simeone set Antoine Griezmann to tap in the second.

Griezmann was thwarted by the boot of Salzburg goalkeeper Alexander Schlager late in the first half but could not be denied a second time as he slotted low across Schlager in stoppage time.

Marcos Llorente drove in Atletico’s fourth in the 63rd minute before 19-year-old Adam Daghim struck home a spectacular consolation for Salzburg in stoppage time – his first Champions League goal. They ended goal 4-1 but a tricky path still awaits.

They still have a difficulty task around as they will play either of Manchester City, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich or Celtic in the last-16 tie.
