Renowned Nigerian comedian and actor Basketmouth, 46, has revealed why he no longer acts as a master of ceremonies (MC) at weddings, citing the need to stay true to his artistic craft.
Speaking during the premiere of his debut feature film “A Ghetto Love” Story, he shared that hosting weddings conflicted with his identity as a stand-up comedian.
Basketmouth explained that while the financial incentives for hosting such events were significant, he felt it compromised his dedication to comedy.
“I didn’t enter this industry to be an MC at weddings. It felt like I was adulterating the art,” he said. The entertainer emphasized that this decision, while financially sacrificial, aligns with his passion for comedy, stating, “I’m losing a lot of money, but it’s not about the money now.
”Although he has decided to step back from wedding gigs, Basketmouth remains open to private events where he can perform stand-up rather than take on hosting duties.
“If I’m doing a private gig, it’ll be 30 minutes of stand-up, not MCing,” he clarified, stressing that preserving his creative integrity is paramount.
This choice underlines the entertainer’s commitment to refining his craft and staying focused on his comedy career, avoiding distractions from roles he perceives as detracting from his artistic authenticity.
