Nigerian Afrobeats artist Orezi has finally shed light on why he stepped back from the limelight.
The singer admitted that his declining ambition was the primary reason for his dwindling presence in the music scene.
In a recent interview on Hip TV’s Trending, the Ogede crooner spoke candidly about how losing the hunger for success and stepping out of the competitive grind affected his progress.
“I faded out [of the music industry] because I became less ambitious and comfortable with where I am,” Orezi said.
“I was always on vacation, enjoying myself. I became less ambitious and took myself out of the competition [in the music industry].”
He went on to highlight how competition keeps artists sharp and consistent, referencing superstar Davido as a prime example of relentless drive.
“Competition fuels consistency. Look at Davido for example, he hustles like an underground artist. He has money and fame but he still maintains his hustling spirit.”
Orezi’s Rise in Music
Orezi, whose real name is Esegine Allen, broke into the Nigerian music scene in 2011 with the hit single Rihanna, a track that immediately caught the attention of fans and industry insiders alike.
He followed up with other notable songs like Shoki, You Garrit, and Ogede, which featured top acts like Wizkid and Timaya. His unique blend of dancehall, Afrobeat, and pop helped him build a strong fan base and made him a regular feature on top music charts across Nigeria and beyond.
In 2015, he released his debut album titled The Ghen Ghen Album, which further solidified his position in the industry. Known for his energetic style and catchy hooks, Orezi was often considered among the wave of new artists shaping Afrobeats at the time.
However, after a string of successful singles, Orezi’s presence in the industry began to wane. Many speculated on the reasons behind his absence, but with this recent revelation, fans now have clarity.
Despite his absence from mainstream music in recent years, Orezi remains a respected figure whose impact on Afrobeats is still recognized.
